Easy Homemade Muesli
Make a big batch to stretch for weeks, or a mini one for merely a morning: power-packed, delicious homemade muesli is ridiculously easy to make!
While a warm, cozy bowl of porridge is our stalwart, reliable breakfast year-round, sometimes nothing beats a bowl of cold cereal—especially if that cereal is muesli. Nutty, chewy, fruity, and brimming with whole grain, fiber-full goodness, muesli is granola’s fitter, humbler cousin. It doesn’t hog the spotlight, but it sure deserves one.
I used to buy boxed (or bagged) muesli whenever my mother-in-law came to stay with us as it was one of her go-to morning staples. It never failed to surprise me, even long before grocery prices really started soaring as they are now, how expensive it was! You’d think it would have occurred to me much, much earlier that I could make my own, just the way I (or my mother in-law) like it best.
Making Homemade Muesli
Making your own muesli is so easy—of course it is! All you really need are traditional rolled oats, nuts and/or seeds, and dried fruits. The details aren’t set in stone, and neither are the quantities. I like to include roughly a 1/2 cup of quinoa flakes for a total of 4 cups oat-grain mix to approximately 3/4 cups nuts and seeds and 3/4 cups mixed dried fruits. By not specifying the exact compositions, there’s no reason to let something little like a paltry amount of pepitas or a scarcity of sunflower seeds prevent you from making a batch of beautifully customizable muesli!
Although the mix-and-match possibilities are part of the fun, we all have our favorites. I love to include pepitas, sliced almonds, and walnut pieces for my nuts/seeds blend, and chopped dates, dried apricots, raisins, golden raisins, and Trader Joe’s unsweetened dried cranberries for the fruits. A sprinkling of unsweetened coconut shreds or flakes is lovely, too!
You choose what goes into your muesli, and literally all that’s left to do is mix them up, at a minimum. That said, lightly baking the oats (and quinoa flakes, if using) as well as the nut mix first adds a warm, toasty flavor and a slight crispness. But you do you. Whether or not you choose to toast, and whatever you put in, the results will be delightful—you know they will. You can’t get better than yourself as the master behind such simple satisfaction. xo
